The Scott County Family Y is ready to give everyone a great time in the pool. In addition to our instructional programs, we’ve got water slides, fun pools, floating toys, ball games and diving boards. Our staff has designed a variety of activities for all ages, especially for youth ages 6 months to 18 years old. We provide many structured activities as well as open, recreational times for kids to do as they choose! Youth can participate in our exciting swim lesson program for people of all abilities, diving classes, gym and fins, competitive swimming clinics, and life guarding classes. (link to Course Catalog) We have 7 pools to choose from, and every one offers a different atmosphere and experience. Youth Aquatics Class Descriptions: *ES (Extra Special) - Available for Pike, Eel, Ray/starfish, the ratio for child to instructor is set down to three to 1, which allows for more one on one attention. *Hard Of Hearing (Bett) - A state certified interpreter will teach beginner/intermediate swimming skills. This class will go over Pike & Eel level skills Small ratio (3:1) for more personal attention and practice time *Plus Classes - For those kids who have struggled with aspects of classes for more than three sessions. The class ratio is just four students to one instructor. *Polliwog - The beginning level to help youth become acquainted with the pool. Learn front/back floating skills, paddle stroke, personal safety and use of floatation device. Skills learned: Stroke development with and with out float belts. Skills needed to pass to Guppy: -Front/back floats; -Paddle on front/side/back 25 yards with a float belt; -Paddle on front/side/back 15 yards without float belt. Red Cross Equivalent: Level 1 *Guppy - Continue to build confidence by practicing paddle strokes skills, floating and rotary breathing with out the aid of a float belt. Skills learned: treading water, front crawl, back/side/breaststroke and elementary backstroke. Skills needed to progress to Minnow: -Front/back floats without belt; -Jumping in deepend without assistance; -Tread water without belt; -Front alternating paddle, rudimentary rhythmic breathing 25 yards with out belt; -Front Symmetrical paddle 25 yards without belt; - Side alternating paddle 25 yards without belt; -Back alternating and back symmetrical paddling 25 yards without belt. Red Cross Equivalent: Level 2 *Minnow - Begin developing endurance. Skills learned: stroke development and endurance, sequencing lead-up strokes and basic rescue & safety skills. Skills needed to progress to Fish: -Tread water one minute; -Swim 25 yards of front crawl with rhythmic breathing, backstroke, and elementary backstroke in moderate form; -Swim 25 yards breaststroke/sidestroke in basic form. Red Cross Equivalent: Level 3 *Fish - Continue stroke development techniques and endurance. Skills learned: Front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, butterfly stroke introduced. To progress to Flying Fish/ Shark: -Tread water for 3 minutes with combination kicks; -Swim 50 yards front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke using open turns; -Swim 25 yards butterfly with/without fins. Red Cross Equivalent: Level 4 *Flying Fish/Shark - Focus on perfecting strokes, increase endurance with open and flip turns. Students are introduced to three new strokes: the inverted breaststroke, trudgen crawl and overarm sidestroke. To progress to Porpoise/Advance Stroke: -Swim 50 yards of overarm sidestroke, trudgen crawl, butterfly stroke with push-offs, front crawl, sidestroke, backstroke, elementary backstroke and breaststroke. -Swim a 200 yard individual medley. Red Cross Equivalent: Level 5 *Porpoise/Advanced Stroke - Designed to work on stroke techniques and endurance.Great class for those on a swim team looking for extra practice. Red Cross: Level 5
