Is it possible to get a good workout without causing the body so much pain?

The thousands of people who have taken water fitness classes at the Scott County Family Y know the answer:

Absolutely.

The movement of the body through water provides resistance throughout the workout.  This means that not only is the heart rate increased while calories are burned, but the entire body is also toned as every muscle is exercised.  On land, the force of gravity makes weight bearing painful because of the compression of the joints in the arms, legs and abdomen. Because water also makes us more buoyant, the pain caused by these forces on the body is eliminated.  This creates an extremely effective, but still lower impact –and therefore less painful -- alternative to land-based fitness.

At the Scott County Family Y, we offer water exercise classes for all ages, all fitness levels and all abilities. (Link to: course catalog) We have designed the programs for both swimmers and non-swimmers.  Our well-trained instructors will give everyone a great workout while helping them reach their health and fitness goals. Come in and join us for a stellar workout…  And a lot of fun!

Aquatic Fitness Classes

*AF (Arthritis Foundation) T'ai Chi- Strengthens and mobilizes joints and muscles, improving physical fitness and mental relaxation.  Sun style Tai Chi is especially appropriate for people with arthritis because it is characterized by agile steps.  These techniques help integrate mind and body into a harmonious inner and outer self.  Held in warm water.

*AFYAP (Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic Program)- Includes low impact exercises designed for people with limited joint motion, strength or cardio-respiratory function.  Held in warm water

*AFYAP Plus-Same as above, but with an additional endurance component.

*Aqua Brunch-Get your day started off right with this class!  Cardiovascular exercise, along with great toning exercises, makes this class ideal for any fitness level.  Go at your own pace and make some great friends! No swimming skills are needed.

*Aqua Challenge-Great for those that want a challenge. Aqua Challenge is a mixture of shallow, deep, combo and kickboxing classes. The class is always changing with music, warm-up, cardio, strength training and a cool down component. Class Intensity: Medium Hard

*B.O.T. (Back on Track: YMCA Healthy Back Aquatic Program)- For people with back pain who want relief from their discomfort and improved overall fitness.  This is a no-impact class.  No swimming skills are necessary.  Held in warm water.

*Combo (Shallow & Deep)-This 45 minute class will is great for those not sure what class to take. Half of the class is in the shallow end and the other half is in the deep end. Class Intensity: Medium hard

*Days End-The perfect way to finish off the day.  This class of stretches and range of motion exercises promotes relaxation and alleviates stress.  Held in warm water.

*Deep Water X-This no impact cardiovascular workout Utilize belts for stabilization and resistance equipment. Class Intensity: Medium Hard

*Hydro Fit-A shallow water workout for all fitness levels.  Cardiovascular and strength exercises utilize various types of equipment.  This is perfect for getting in shape and having fun. 

*Joints-N-Motion-Maintain flexibility and range of motion.  Endurance and strength components are also emphasized.  Held in warm water.

*Masters Workout

*Mom’s Wellness-Experience the natural benefits of water fitness.  Expecting and new mothers will develop a healthy lifestyle.  Relaxation and peer support are a strong focus.  Held in warm water.  

*Night Jammers-This no impact, deep water cardiovascular workout is a great way to end your day.  Whether you set your pace at easy or hard, you’ll sleep well after this workout!  Utilize belts for stabilization and resistance equipment for added intensity. No swimming skills needed, just motivation!

*Shallow Water X/Exercise-A shallow water workout for all fitness levels.  Use of different equipment and a pace you set help you get the cardiovascular and toning benefits you want.  No swimming skill needed.

*Tri-Athlete Swim-Sharpen up your swim skills with some coaching and support.
