Exciting changes are on the way for the Childcare and Family Services branch of the Scott County Family Y!

My name is Deb Gustafson, and I am the new Executive Director of Child & Family Services.  I officially took over this position on November 13th, 2006.  However, I am not new to the Scott County Family YMCA.  I was privileged to work for the Scott County Family Y in the childcare division from 1987 – 2001, when I left to complete my Bachelor’s degree from St. Ambrose University.  I am delighted to be back at the YMCA and look forward to meeting all of the staff, children & families as soon as possible.

We have already made some changes to our program that we feel will enable us to serve you better, and to maintain consistent quality of care.  The first change is that Brent Ayers has been promoted to Associate Executive Director.  This means that Brent is now in charge of all of our out of the building childcare programs which includes PEP as well as Kids Club.  This of course also means that other staffs have been given the opportunity to accept new and exciting challenges and roles!

At the Learning Center located at our Downtown Y branch, we are currently looking for a new center director; however this has not stopped our progress in developing and improving our services at this site.  I am proud to announce that the Learning Center has been a participant in the Quality Through Accreditation program and they are well on their way to submitting a center improvement plan based upon the information we have learned throughout this process.  We will keep you posted as new developments occur.

Our Palmer / YMCA facility will be applying to begin the Quality Through Accreditation Process in January of 2007, and we are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to receive training that will help us to continue towards the standards of excellence that you have come to expect from YMCA programs.

I have not had an opportunity to visit any of our Kids Club sites or PEP programs as of yet, but I have heard many wonderful things about what is happening with our community partnerships.  We are looking forward to strengthening these ties and continuing to help each other help the children and families that we serve.

Please feel free to email me or call me at my offices located at the Downtown YMCA branch (322-7171).  I enjoy visiting with parents, and appreciate hearing about ways in which we can better serve our children and families to build strong children, strong families and strong communities!
